Hatchet 3 (2013) film review (Decker Shado film review)

Hatchet 3 is the 2013 horror film of the Hatchet series. It tells the story of Victor Crowley, his murderous rampage through Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder plays Victor Crowley and Brian Quinn is Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanderbilt plays Misty.

Its use of special effects is the main feature of the film. Hatchet 3 uses a lot less CG effects than other horror films. This allows for some truly terrifying moments to be recorded in the movie.

The cast is solid, with Kane Hodder proving to (click now to see videos) be an intimidating villain. The dialogue is sufficiently campy and tongue-in-cheek for it to be reminiscent of a classic '80s slasher movie at times. Additionally, there are certain moments of genuine comedy throughout, which provide a comical contrast to the heart-wrenching action.

Unfortunately, due to the budget being small (1 million dollars), many locations were duplicates from previous films. The boat house in Hatchet 2 was only used once and the remainder of the footage seems like it's been duplicated from previous films. Hatchet or Hatchet2 may feel it's a familiar film.

Overall, Hatchet 3 was enjoyable although it was like the previous entries within the series. It was filled with gory thrills as well as entertaining performances by the cast members.

We hate Hatchet 3 (by Decker Shado)

Hatchet 3 is the Hatchet's horror film of 2013. It chronicles Victor Crowley's ongoing adventures in Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp, as in addition to his violent murderous rampage. Kane Hodder portrays Victor Crowley while Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanbilt plays Misty.

The film's greatest strength is its use of practical special effects. Hatchet 3 uses a majority of practical makeup effects and sets. This is a departure from many horror movies nowadays that heavily rely on CG effects. The film also has several truly terrifying moments.

Kane Hodder is a standout in the ensemble and is a formidable villain. It's like a slasher film from the 1980s and the dialogue is somewhat funny and snarky. Additionally, there are some genuinely funny moments throughout that provide comedic contrast against all of the gut-wrenching action on screen.

Unfortunately, (blog) due to the limited budget (reportedly just $1 million) most of the locations are repeats from previous films in the series--the same boat house was used two times within the movie and much of it feels like it's been recycled from other films in this franchise. Hatchet or Hatchet2 may feel it's a familiar film.

In the end, Hatchet 3 was very enjoyable. I found it to be remarkably similar to other entries in this series. However, Hatchet 3 provided lots of gory thrills and entertaining performances from its actors.
